Venom: 18 Easter Eggs & References Explained

17. The Life Foundation

The Life Foundation might sound like a generic philanthropic entity rustled up out of nowhere for this movie, but it was actually first featured in the Spider-Man comics 30 years ago.

The motives of Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) and his foundation in the film are actually pretty similar to those in the comics, to tinker with human genetics and DNA in order to prepare for an impending apocalypse.

Drake makes the rather comical assertion that end-times are coming for humanity within a generation, and his experiments are an attempt to combat that alongside cancer.

So no, if you thought Life was a reference to the Ryan Reynolds-starring sci-fi movie last year that everybody thought was a Venom origin story, that's not even remotely the case.
