Two thoughts went through my head the moment I heard that a spin-off to The Amazing Spider-Man - with Venom as the protagonist - was being made. The first was "HELL YEAH!", which is a perfectly rational reaction to hearing your favourite character from the Spider-Man franchise is getting their own film, of course. But my second reaction was more along the lines of: "What if it ends up being like Spider-Man 3?" Venom has had one big screen outing thus far and it was, for all intents and purposes, pretty darn terrible. But Sony are determined to correct the atrocities committed by Venom's infamous 2007 depiction, and I have taken the liberty of compiling a list of 5 simple things they need to do to avoid another disaster of Topher Grace proportions...
5. Make Him Big
One of Venom's key traits is that he's absolutely freakin' huge. His size clearly symbolises how much stronger he is than Spider-Man... and with this size, he's also deviously quick. This forces Spidey to use his wits to dispatch of him and makes for creative fights. Why then, in Spider-Man 3, did they think it necessary to make him about as physically intimidating as George McFly, pre-Biff punch? Venom looked like Spider-Man after a gym session in 3, not Spider-Man on steroids, which is what he should totally look like. It's pretty simple really: they have to make Venom an absolute monster in this film to establish him as a force to be reckoned with. He shouldn't even have to utter a single word to show us that he means business. And speaking of not having to utter a single word...
