With the impending strike from the Writers Guild, Directors Guild and the Screen Actors Guild, studio’s are rushing to greenlight projects left, right and centre before next summer. Coming Soon have somehow got hold of a memo which has been branded around major talent agencies in Hollywood showing us just exactly what projects studio’s want to see completed before the strike begins.
All these movies we can consider to be fast-tracked for release and studio’s want them all done as quickly as possible. Some interesting tidbits have come out of the list…
As far as I can tell (and I have read the list three times) I can see no word on JURASSIC PARK IV, THE HOBITT, THE TERMINATOR 4 or SUPERMAN: THE MAN OF STEEL.
Looks like none of those projects will be happening anytime soon as studio’s would like us to believe. Onto to those movies that are happening…
The adaptation of the T.V. series Land of the Lost looks now to be in the hands of Brad Silberling and not Robert Rodriguez as we previously thought. Siberling’s last movie was the kids fantasy flick Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and it looks as if the director will be sticking in that genre for his next movie.
Steven Spielberg is listed as directing The Trial of the Chicago 7 for Dreamworks. The movie is about the seven Chicago Men who were charged with inciting the infamous riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. The script comes from Aaron Sorkin and for whatever reason, the project seems to have been fast tracked above Interstellar and his Abraham Lincoln biopic which was to star Liam Neeson.
David Fincher is attached to Torso, a movie adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name which follows the story of real life federal agent Elliot Ness (who has played by Kevin Costner in The Untouchables) after he closes down the Al Capone case in Chicago. Similar to the “Zodiac” killings, the movie will follow the “Torso” killings.
CAMERON CROWE HAS A MOVIE ON THE LIST. HE IS NOT DEAD YET. WOOHOO!
Guy Ritchie is said to be attached to the remake of The Dirty Dozen. If that’s the director who gave us Snatch and not the one we have been stuck with for the last seven years then this could be one helluva project and like I said earlier, Tarantino and his Inglorious Bastards wants to wary of this project. Especially if Ritchie does end up being at the helm because as many have pointed out… Ritchie takes lots from Tarantino… and with Quentin kind of remaking The Dirty Dozen with his war picture we could essentially end up with two films virtually exactly the same.
Robert Redford will be directing a movie titled Against All Enemies at Sony replacing Paul Haggis. The movie follows a counterterrorism adviser to the past three presidents, who charges that the Bush administration prioritized Iraq above threats from al Qaeda before and after the September 11, 2001 attacks
Wolfgang Petersen has a movie titled Alien Uprising on the list. Could that just be the new name for this Orson Scott Card adaptation Ender’s Game? Petersen also has his newly announced movie The Grays on the list over at Sony.
Edgar Wright’s next project looks to be Scott Pilgrim which has something to do with a guy beating off his new girlfriend’s seven ex-boyfriends.
Fresh from being booted off from Warner Brothers The Invasion, Olivier Hirschbiegel will be helming Disney’s Boy Soldier. I couldn’t find any details on that one.
Interestingly, George Miller is only in brackets for Justice League movie.
Some suprising movies on the list which look to be completed by next summer…
Tulia – John Singleton (as it looked like the movie was scrapped after Halle Berry’s pregnancy)
George Miller is strangely only in brackets for Justice League movie.
DIRECTORS STILL NEEDED FOR…
Jungle Cruise – A movie from the writers of Smallville based on the Walt Disney ride of the same name which was one of the opening 22 attractions back in 1955.
Prince of Persia – Walt Disney’s next big adventure epic which they hope will become the new Pirates of the Caribbean-like franchise for them. Based on the best selling video games which play similar to the classic Sinbad movies, the film is hoped to be the big summer tentpole of 2009, with Michael Bay’s name heavily rumored for the director’s chair in the past.
Porky’s – A remake of the 1982 comedy movie from the late Bob Clark which was set in 1954 Florida where a group of schoolers attempted to lose their virginity which led them to seek revenge on a sleazy nightclub owner and his redneck sheriff brother for harassing them.
Gulliver’s Travels – Apparently a new adaptation of the classic Jonathan Swift 18th century novel is in the works over at 20th Century Fox. I hadn’t heard this before, so as far as I am aware this is a new announcement.
Selling Time – The 20th Century Fox movie which Spike Lee tried to sign Tom Cruise up for last year before Cruise decided to shoot Lions of Lambs for his own United Artists company is now said to be in need of a director. The movie is about a man who is given the unique opportunity to relive the worst day of his life, in exchange for seven years off his own life expectancy.
20,00 Leagues – Another movie I didn’t know was in production. This is likely to yet another take on the Jules Verne classic novel which is being setup at New Line Cinema.
Gears of War – We believe Len Wiseman will be directing New Line’s big budget adaptation of the best selling Xbox 360 game once he has completed the Escape from New York remake although his name has strangely being left off this list.
Voltron – New Regency’s (a sub department of 20th Century Fox) answer to Paramount’s Transformers is in need of a director.
Winter of Frankie Machine – Paramount’s movie about a mob hitman who gave up the game for a quiet life as the proprietor of a bait shop only to find he has been setup by a Mafiasco was set to be directed by Martin Scorsese, which would see him re-team with his former muse Robert De Niro… but plans seem to have changed. A new director is need. Is De Niro still on board then?
World War Z -Paramount’s adaptation of Max Brook’s apocalyptic novel which Brad Pitt at one time was eying to star in, is still without a director.
Clash of the Titans – Will Sam Raimi do it? Who knows, but with the strike looming it surely won’t be long until we find out.
Sherlock Holmes – Warner Brothers bought the rights to Sherlock Holmes back in March and they quickly hired Neil Marshall, the director of The Descent to helm. The new movie is set to be a re-imaging of the character, although Marshall’s name is no longer listed.
