8. Roger Deakins

Career So Far: A longtime collaborator of such luminaries as Joel and Ethan Coen, Sam Mendes and Denis Villeneuve, 67-year old British cinematographer Deakins has long been regarded one of, if not the very best in his field.

As such, many had long been outraged that, despite 13 nominations - for, amongst others, The Shawshank Redemption, No Country For Old Men and Skyfall - he had never yet taken home the gold.

2018 Oscar Win For: 14th time's a charm, it seems, as Deakins finally won the Best Achievement In Cinematography Academy Award for Blade Runner 2049. (The film was nominated in four other technical categories, and had one more win for Best Visual Effects.)

What's Next: Deakins is currently at work on The Goldfinch, an upcoming drama based on a Donna Tartt novel, from Brooklyn director John Crowley. Cast includes Nicole Kidman, Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, It).
