What The Hell Are Those New Monsters On The Alien Covenant Set?

Some incredible set photos have leaked from the set of Ridley Scott's Alien: Covenant, revealing the presence of some creepy unnamed monsters we've never seen in the franchise to date.

In a handful of set shots posted on the Daily Mail, the monsters were revealed at a quarry in Sydney, Australia, seemingly attacking humanoid figures. Both aliens and "humans"are oddly turned into stone after what appears to be a battle between the two factions to make it away from each other and from whatever petrified them.

The whole set seems reminiscent of an end of civilization scene - it's very Pompeii like - suggesting perhaps that this planet is a precursor to Earth where the Engineers initially attempted to bring human life together. That would seemingly be corroberated by the fact that there appears to be what remains of a giant stone statue in the image of the Engineer seen in Prometheus.

Clearly this is the "mysterious planet" that the crew of the colony ship Covenant discover, and which is the new home of android David after the events of Prometheus. And even more clearly, something big went down in the past.

It looks like the doomed figures were attempting to get up a giant stone runway to what is probably going to be a temple or pyramid-like structure that is digitally added in in post-production when they were struck down. Could it be the result of the planet's sun? Or a catastrophic event like a volcanic eruption?

And most importantly, how does this all fit into the wider narrative of the creation of the xenomorphs? Are those new alien monsters the missing link?
