Every year with the cost of movie making (especially in blockbuster terms) escalating hugely and the line between a failure and a bankable franchise starter with sequels and spin-off potential slips closer towards a ridiculous level. The mentality seems to be why make $500m when you could make $1 billion, and the compromises made on that agenda are hurting Hollywood. But alongside all of the cynicism attached to the almighty lure of the dollar, it is a simply held truth that in most cases the most lucrative films of the year tend to be the best ones. In most cases. This year’s haul of top sellers might not have included many billion dollar monsters - in fact just one made it to that level (unjustly) - but with $500m the benchmark for a top ten berth, a lot of money was still spent on tickets and popcorn. Inevitably a good deal of that was spent on comic book movies and franchises, but two new properties managed to hold their own against the spandex and sequels…
