At this time of year, attention inevitably turns back on the preceding 12 months as lists of the greatest performances and pictures are compiled, the worst moments and movies are trawled through painfully and potential award winners are picked out from the pack. With only a handful of major releases (decreased this time out thanks to the influence of terrorist hackers), it's a time for reflection and taking stock before launching into next year reinvigorated. Sadly for some, 2014 was a year of ends as some truly gifted actors, directors and film professionals left this mortal coil and went to play endlessly on the big silver screen in the sky. Some left incredibly rich careers behind them, studded with awards recognition and personal accolades that went far beyond the traditional limits of acting or film-making. Others, tragically, died too young with years of potential success lying ahead. With that in mind, it's time to look back over the 21 most notable and most gifted actors, directors and film industry workers who died in 2014, leaving the industry improved for their involvement and poorer for their loss...

21. Richard Attenborough

Rating: 1923-2014

Few people did as much for British film as Richard Attenborough: working tirelessly for 30 days from the 1950s onwards, often without guaranteed paydays. In return, he was made President of BAFTA - a fitting tribute. Not only was he a brilliant actor, he was also an Oscar winning director, and as a final mark of respect Jurassic World will feature a tribute to him (albeit in character form).
