Only Star Wars could boast the kind of super-fans that it continues to despite three comparatively poorly received sequels, a Holiday Special that even George Lucas appears to be embarrassed about and some of the most ludicrous and baffling merchandise licensing decisions that would make Vince McMahon blush. Through all of the bad times and the weird, Star Wars endures, growing bigger with every passing year, with next year's Episode VII likely to break the internet in a way that Kim Kardashian's gleaming backside couldn't even manage. With George Lucas stepped aside (and hopefully a creative influence in title alone), JJ Abrams is guiding the Galaxy Far, Far Away to an entirely new - but entirely faithful - place and times are good for Star Wars fans. Excitement is already reaching exceptional levels, and all that's been released so far amounts to 88 seconds and some vague promotional images. The hype machine that met the original trilogy seems to back in full swing, and there's little of the cynical feeling that met Episodes II and III. With that in mind, this is the perfect time to look back at the time before and around the original trilogy, when the world of Star Wars was new and George Lucas was still an exciting young film-maker with only a vague idea about intergalactic trade routes being more important than actual exciting things...
