10 2017 Video Games That Wasted Their Biggest Selling Point

9. Saving The Brand And Telling A Great Single Player Story - Star Wars Battlefront 2

It should not be this hard to make a Star Wars video game the whole world falls in love with.

Remember the halcyon days of Jedi Knight, The Force Unleashed or Knights of the Old Republic? Lucasfilm knew exactly who to trust with the license, and exactly which games to pump out. Now EA are behind the controls, we get one uber-expensive, all bells n' whistles mess every couple of years.

Yes, there are mobile apps also bearing the iconic yellow and black logo, but come time for Battlefront 2 to right the ship and prove why EA deserve to hold the license in the first place, it dropped the ball in landmark fashion. Our old friend microtransactions was back, and not only was the game's entire progression tied to blind boxes dictating what upgrades you got, but you could actively pay to win by unlocking more whenever you liked.

All of this is without mentioning the single player story - one that was heavily marketed and showcased as being entirely Empire-themed. Introducing us to Iden Versio, an imperial soldier who hailed from the planet Vardos - a planet that happily marched to the beat of the Empire’s drum - we’d finally get a unique look into the lives and beliefs of the everyday soldier on the other side of the fence.

How did all of that shake out in the final product? By having an early plot twist shift Iden’s allegiances as she suddenly joined the rebels, was welcomed essentially with open arms, and set about gunning down her former stormtrooper friends as “Generic Star Wars Story #6315” played out.

What a waste of everybody’s time.
