10 Awesome Gaming Franchises It Became Cool To Hate

Come on, give them a break.

When it comes to the feelings we have towards a particular video game series, many factors can contribute to a change in opinion. Maybe a franchise has gone on so long it has grown stale or is irrelevant to the greater cultural landscape. Or maybe the way a publisher handles a license and treats its customers generates negative feelings towards that license. Sometimes though, it can be a bit hyperbolic. Something is either the best thing ever or a worthless pile of garbage, and it is easy to see why this mentality is problematic. It stops discussion about the merits and/or problems of a game and instead devolves into heated arguments. Unfortunately this has happened to many game franchises; franchises which have helped form the landscape which now attacks it. By far the worst aspect of this reaction is the perceived relationship it has to gamer culture. Some franchises are now "cool" to hate, and if you don't hate them you risk being labeled a filthy "casual" gamer. Granted, many of these game series have faults worth pointing out, especially in regards to the business practices around them. Yet when you break down much of the reason for their perceived hate it doesn't hold up for the simple fact that all these games are actually good, at least in what they set out to achieve. The following game franchises are criticized or hated by a certain percent of the gaming population not because they necessarily deserve it, but simply as a means of generating "gamer cred" or a feeling of self-righteousness. Here are 10 awesome game franchises it became cool to hate.
