10 Awesome Platformers Not Made By Nintendo

10. Duck Tales

Duck TalesCapcom/Disney InteractiveUnfortunately, licensed video games often turn out to be bad video games. Frequently, the glamour of showcasing our favorite characters in the game is put to the forefront while actual gameplay and story is quietly ushered out the backdoor. Many gamers, whether experienced or not, have had their hopes crushed by a shoddy attempt to bring their favorite films or shows into the video-gaming realm. Although there is a plethora of licensed duds on every system, there are still a few that set the standard for what a licensed game should be. The best example of this is 1989€™s Duck Tales for the NES, arguably one of the best games on the platform. Duck Tales follows Scrooge McDuck, the character from Disney€™s cartoon series, as he travels around the world, trying to beat out his rival Flintheart Glomgold for the title of richest duck in the world. Yay vanity! Although Duck Tales follows a similar structure as many other platformers of its time, it has a few features that make the game shine. It is often praised for its tight and unique controls that make the most of what little the system had to offer at that point in time. When standing on the ground, Scrooge McDuck is able to swing his cane at enemies. However, he can also use his cane like a pogo stick whilst jumping, either crushing enemies beneath him or using it to propel himself over hazards or higher into unreachable areas. Thematically, Duck Tales shines. There are five stages, in which the player is able to explore in any order, and later revisit in order to find goodies that may have been overlooked. Each stage is colorful, much like many other Capcom platformers of the time. Perhaps the most impressive part of Duck Tales is how good the music is in relation to each stage. The tunes just seem to fit and are actually quite catchy. In fact, there are actually a number of remixes of the game€™s €œMoon Theme€ floating around the Internet. Whether you€™re a fan of the Duck Tales series or just on a nostalgia kick, Duck Tales is a great game that€™s well worth a play-through on the NES.
