10 Awesome Video Games That Should Have Been Terrible

3. South Park: The Stick Of Truth

South Park games have ranged from mediocre (the original South Park shooter) to the average (Let's Go Tower Defence), and despite the flat paper cut-out visual style and violent, no-holds-barred humour of the TV series seemingly lending it well to video game adaptations, no developer had ever quite pulled it off. As such, we were justified in thinking that Stick of Truth would be no different. Enter Obsidian Entertainment, the masterful RPG developers behind Fallout: New Vegas and Planescape: Torment, who teamed up with Trey Parker and Matt Stone to make a South Park game in the style of a traditional turn-based RPG. The game succeeds in capturing the spirit of the hit TV series down to a tee. The presentation could easily have been a regular episode of the series, and was written with the same amount of gusto and hilarity. It wouldn't be an overstatement to say that Stick of Truth is the funniest game ever made. It's great to see South Park's trademark satirical humour gets turned on the role-playing genre here. Magic is converted into farts, character classes include the Fighter, Thief, Mage and Jew (see the series, get the joke), and instead of poisoning enemies you can gross them out to make them vomit. Even though the gameplay is simplistic, each encounter against zombies, Nazis or ginger kids is compelling to play for the brilliantly-written comedy gold that you're like to get out of it. While all other South Park games felt like poor cash-ins on the license, this is an awesome tribute to both the series and to the RPG genre that no none of us expected.
