10 Beautiful Video Game Songs

7. Journey - I Was Born For This

Following from Portal's example of ignoring the trend in lifeless, generic credit tracks, Journey developed a track that reflected the beauty of its gameplay.

Whilst travelling alone through the barren landscape with the singular goal of reaching the top of a distant mountain, the player encounters an unknown partner, who will become their companion and only aid in solving the various puzzles they encounter.

When the pair finally make it to the end of the game, having never spoken a word to each other, it is an incredibly emotional moment in no small part due to the music.

The strings take players back to the shifting sands of the desert location, and the lyrics play on the element of communication in the co-operative game by using a mix of languages, including Greek, French, Old English, and Latin. This variety of languages follows on from the destroyed civilisation that the player passes through on their way up the mountain, once again linking the listener back to the game.

For a game that is built on gameplay through music and visual storytelling, this song perfectly sums up one of the greatest games of this generation.

They don't let me write here anymore. I think they were put off by my handlebar moustache.
