For many, Devil May Cry was unforgiving – especially for those otherwise unfamiliar with the genre – but that was also its greatest strength.

There was an inherent appeal in grinding through sequences, replaying them repeatedly in an attempt to score the highest possible score, trying to figure out the most effective way of dismembering a room of opponents.

The most powerful combinations are equally the most difficult to perform – punishing the player for the slightest miscommunication – and enemies are capable of dealing huge amounts of damage, sometimes without warning.
