10 Controversial Video Game Levels That Were Completely Misunderstood

Sometimes controversy appears for controversy's sake. Had these games done anything wrong?

Nowadays, it feels like it's impossible to find a video game that hasn't created controversy for one reason or another. You could pull apart just about any video game and find one scene or one line which offends somebody somewhere; that's just something we have to accept. On the other hand, there are games which seem intent to create controversy and make headlines; games which push the boundaries of what is considered acceptable. While some of it may be harsh, even as gamers, we have to step back and wonder if developers actually intended to cause harm. Of course, not all controversial games are intentionally offensive. As the examples in this article show, controversy can be caused by just about anything: translation errors; poorly edited trailers; apparent racism; or, in some cases, absolutely nothing. In many cases, a controversial scene or mission may simply be a misunderstanding; the developers intentions simply got lost somewhere down the line or it may have been taken out-of-context. Some examples on this list were intentionally controversial in order to critique real-life events or create mature stories; somewhere down the line, the developers goals were simply missed. The ten examples on this list are all missions or events which attracted controversy which was either blown out-of-proportion or occurred as a result of a misunderstanding. While you may not agree with everything, at the very least, this article should show you that not every developer is out to upset people. If you can think of any more examples of controversial events which were actually complete misunderstandings, please feel free to add them in the comments below.

I have an addiction to achievements, a craving for new bands and a dream to become Captain America. I once finished second in a Mario Kart 7 tournament so I'm kind of a big deal.
