10 Controversial Video Games That Caused Major Moral Panic

5. The Punisher (2005)

the punisher video game The Punisher is based on the antics of the antihero Frank Castle in Marvel Comics. Frank has a real grudge against the mafia ever since they wiped out his family. He has devoted his life to punishing criminals for their deeds. The game basically consists of Frank killing various criminals, along the way we run into cameos of Marvel Comics characters. So what trouble did The Punisher get into with the censors? It was threatened with an AO rating by the ESRB in America due to its graphic violence but never actually officially got the certificate. Once the developers turned the interrogation scene into black and white it was granted an M certificate. In the UK, the BBFC, required further cuts - distancing the camera from the killings - in order for the film to be rated 18. It is one of the very few games that have required cuts to gain an 18 certificate. Australia also demanded cuts and in Germany, the film was placed on the infamous Federal Department for Media Harmful To Young Person's List.
