For whatever reason, video games have a history of providing less than stellar endings. Whether it€™s because of expectations or the all too common 'end game twist', genuinely good video game finales are a dime a dozen.

And yet, perhaps even less common are the endings that aren€™t so cut and dry, leading to people never agreeing on whether they're truly good or bad, for a variety of different reasons. While one person may see the brilliance of something that takes you by surprise and undermines expectations, another may simply feel betrayed or unsatisfied.

Perhaps something is near universally praised, while its contents inspire passionate debate regardless. Either way, some of the biggest talking points fans will engage in come from whatever they were feeling when the credits rolled.

It serves that as video games evolve and content creators take more creative risks, we get more and more things to pick apart and analyse.

However, the following endings - for a variety of reasons - have proven controversial and divided gamers since day one...

10. Resistance 2

Resistance 2 continues the story of Nathan Hale and his battle against the invading Chimera. Much of the game deals with the fact that Hale is infected with the Chimeran virus and his efforts to resist it, but contrary to what you expect, the game ends with him completely succumbing to the infection.

With no hope of recovery, he is shot in the head by his comrade Joseph Capelli. That... was... worth it?

It€™s always risky to dispose of your protagonist midway through your overall story, but the developers of Resistance 2 felt it was the right decision. And while one can see the merits of taking such a risk, the opinion of many is that the execution is lacking and thus dramatically unsatisfying. It doesn€™t help that a gunshot followed by cut to black has become such a cliché that it borders on absurdity, either.

Still, you can€™t argue that it goes against expectations, and it ups the stakes quite dramatically going into the next game. It was a bold move, and there is no doubt that a good number of people were responsive to what is essentially a resetting of the table just as things get intense, which, according to who you talk to, is either a brilliant move or a colossal misfire.
