10 Excessively Violent Video Game Moments That Shocked The World

9. Nuke Death - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2S3N0uSSho While the first three Call of Duty games were fairly serious affairs, the fourth, Modern Warfare, sought to really challenge viewers and shake them up on a visceral level. The more mature tone is cemented mid-way through the first game, when Infinity Ward pulled a very ballsy move that shocked the world simply by staunchly defying player expectation. The ninth level in the game, Shock and Awe, is easily the most memorable, if only for the climactic escape sequence, in which you end up boarding a chopper and high-tailing it out of there...except a nuke is detonated, reducing the city to rubble and downing your helicopter in the blast wave. In typical video game fashion, it fades out and fades back in, with your character waking up. "Great", we think, "now let's get revenge for this s**t!". This isn't the hung-ho 1980s action movie we might have been led to believe; we get to stumble around for a few more moments, blurry vision and all, before collapsing and dying from the blast. It's a sobering, lonely moment of gaming and easily one of the best of the current generation. Though not violent in the gory, disgusting sense, there's no doubting the violent excess of a nuclear bomb being detonated.
