What’s better than playing a game? Playing a game and discovering the game you’re playing has another tucked away inside.

Indeed, there are a multitude of mini-games, hidden gems and throwbacks to old classics hidden in a lot of games, and most of them are brilliant. Some even work against the main campaign or story, being a whole lot more fun than the game itself, meaning players are more likely to sink hours of time into a meaningless throwaway experience than the parts they were supposed to play.

Either way, it’s time to explore the many layers of games as we delve into the multitude of games within games, and list 10 you really must play. Chances are, some of your favourite games have way more to offer than you think...

10. Dead Ops Arcade - Call Of Duty: Black Ops

Activision

Breaking free from your bonds on the Black Ops loading screen, you can escape the chair your character is bound to and wander about the room in which you are held captive. In the corner is a computer, and with the right set of commands, Dead Ops Arcade is unlocked.

A top down, twin stick shooter, Dead Ops Arcade has you playing through a unique zombie level as you try to fend of hordes of zombies and survive as many rounds as you can. A fun addition and twist on the already stellar Zombie mode with plenty of action and fast-paced combat to soak up an hour or two of your time. It also harkens back to a time when the developers of Call of Duty cared about their games.

These days they wouldn’t dare put anything in a game that a player might not see first time. Otherwise people might play their games twice! The humanity!

I like video games, writing and writing about video games. Expect sarcasm and the dry wit of a Brit. And the occasional rant of a unhappy Scot. You know... the usual.
