10 Great Video Game Sequels The Fans Rejected

9. Max Payne 3

There's a reason this didn't sell so well.

One of the biggest points of contention from fans with Max Payne 3 was its massive tonal shift. The original two games had a pulpy, dark tone that was juxtaposed by bullet time and diving about with twin pistols, whereas Max Payne 3 went for a much more generic style.

Most of the game was spent in the sunny locale of Brazil, as opposed to the darkness of New York. Couple that with annoying graphical filters and long cutscenes, and you can see why some people were disappointed.

Beyond those issues though, Max Payne 3 is actually one of the more memorable games that Rockstar released in the previous generation. Extremely punchy and tight gunplay, amazing bullet time mechanics and a legitimately interesting narrative make Max Payne 3 one of the most confusing entries on this list.

It really does come down to the difference in style, and that's a big shame.
