Beyond a shadow of a doubt, Pac-Man – the arcade classic released in 1980 – was a ground-breaking achievement in gaming. The game invented power-ups and cutscenes, and is easily one of the most famous gaming staples in history, instantly recognisable around the world, appealing to just about everyone, regardless of age or gender.

Contrary to popular opinion, Donkey Kong was only the second game to feature animated cutscenes to advance the story. In reality, this honour goes to Pac-Man, which invented the staple a year earlier in 1980. Besides that, the power pellets in the game are technically the earliest recorded example of power-ups, which Pac-Man consumes in order to become momentarily invincible, allowing him to consume his pursuers for temporary catharsis, and points.

There were early games – but, when it comes to the modern definition of video games – Pac-Man is perhaps the most ground-breaking, influential game ever made, pioneering numerous conventions we now take for granted.
