10 Huge Gaming Controversies That Rocked Sony PlayStation

10. 2011's PlayStation Network Hack - 77 Million Accounts Affected

One of the biggest instances of "I told you so!" in the history of the company, as it was reported Sony staffers wanted to upgrade their software and online protection protocols not weeks before this overwhelmingly crippling attack hit the PlayStation Network, breaching the personal information of over 77 million accounts. Eventually Sony managed to shut it down, but not before they'd been dragged through the muck by every media outlet under the sun for taking so long to acknowledge it in the first place. People were suitably horrified that everything from addresses to contact details and financial information was now in the hands of anonymous hackers, and it would take Sony a good year of completely reworking their PR budget to compensate. One positive thing gamers did receive as a direct result was free games - and lots of them. Everything from Ratchet & Clank to Infamous, Wipeout HD, LittleBigPlanet and even the stellar PSP version of Killzone were offered as an apology, with Sony seemingly on their hands and knees crying into your shoes in the process.
