10 Iconic Video Games You Almost Lost To Development Hell

10. Gran Turismo 5

Gran Turismo 5 had a weird release. First announced at E3 in 2005, there was no way the game was going to be ready in time for the PS3's 2006 launch. Instead, developers Polyphony Digital revealed a paid demo for the game, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, that would come out in 2008 for the PS3. Similar to the Prologue for the fourth entry into the series, the game essentially served as a small sampling of the upcoming release, and even enjoyed sales of around 5 million even though it was essentially nothing but a teaser of things to come. The main game was expected to follow the demo around a year later, but the title never actually materialised. In interviews around 2010, the developers claimed the fifth game was ready to go, but that they were holding onto it to make sure it was the best Gran Turismo it could possibly be. At this point, fans became worried that the developers had become too invested into their creation, not knowing when to actually call it a day and move on. It was a strange situation, because to everyone on the outside it seemed like Gran Turismo 5 was primed and ready, but someone was holding it back. Fortunately, the full title eventually saw a release at the tail end of 2010, after over five years and $60 million dollars worth of development.
