Retro City Rampage was released in 2012 for just about every major console, handheld, and PC, making it one of the widest-released games on this list when it first came onto the scene.

Back in 2002, Brian Provinciano began a homebrew project to recreate Grand Theft Auto III in the style of the Nintendo Entertainment System. His love for that title led him to create his own NES development kit so he could create an homage to his favorite game using 8-bit graphics. He dubbed it 'Grand Theftendo, and continued to build upon his work for several years.

The game ultimately developed into a title of its own, taking inspiration from GTA III. Provinciano used the locations and characters from other titles he enjoyed as a way to build upon his work. Retro City Rampage features elements similar to Super Mario Bros., Duck Hunt, River City Ransom, and many more classics.

When it was finally released a decade after he began, Retro City Rampage became a massive success. It holds an 83/100 on Metacritic and sold more than 600,000 copies within only two years of release.
