10 Infuriating Levels That Almost Derailed Great Games

9. Crash Bandicoot (PSX) €“ Road to Nowhere

http://youtu.be/Gi0ugx6JYlc When Crash Bandicoot first came out it was quite an astonishing and unique gameplay experience. To my memory it was one of the very first fully 3D platformers on the market and many children of the mid-to-late eighties will probably remember spending hours at a time wading through level after level of torturous but compulsively playable platform challenges. But one level in particular sticks out in my memory as being probably quite a similar experience to having your scrotum used as a pin cushion: Road to Nowhere. Road to Nowhere was like masochism for kids. It was essentially a long bridge packed with enemies, TNT and loose planks that€™d fall if you stepped too long on them meaning you basically couldn€™t stop. I remember reaching this level with around thirty lives and still hitting a game over screen before I reached the end. Think you can do better? I urge you to try €“ just don€™t come back expecting WhatCulture! to shell out when you bite your controller in half.
