Games created by independent studios usually come with a hint of mystery and the hope that a new dimension can be brought to the industry. Witchfire, designed by Polish developer The Astronauts, looks like it could return a missing element in the form of a retro first-person shooter.

Set in a dark fantasy world, Witchfire focuses purely on trying to survive against groups of evil witches, as the player takes on the role of a witch hunter from the church. With no cut scenes in the game, the emphasis is on the weaponry and first-person shooter dynamic.

The atmosphere is sufficiently creepy, while the monsters wouldn’t look out of place in The Witcher series. Where Witchfire could shine is in following the Dark Souls-esque style of storytelling, with players needing to discover the lore for themselves. The customisation of different guns could also be a source of entertainment for the player - and it all around just looks stellar and inventive.
