10 Most Essential Nintendo Switch Games (So Far)

10. Splatoon 2

Splatoon 2
Nintendo

Only Nintendo could make an online team shooter where gameplay isn't predicated on blasting each others' faces off.

In a rather genius, family-friendly move, Splatoon 2 only requires (for the majority of its modes, anyway) that you cover as much of the level as possible in your team colour's paint. Even other modes like Splat Zones, Tower Control and Rainmaker are predicated on securing specific pieces of turf, moving landmarks or transporting paint-spewing equipment respectively - the entire focus being on killing other players if need be, but mainly having fun making a huge mess.

New for this sequel is a really fun single-player, too; something mostly predicated on letting you try all the weapons in the game as you blast through scores of gorgeous levels, but thankfully the bosses throughout are brilliantly designed, making this more than just another online-only shooter.

As a counterpoint to the 'big bro' releases like Call of Duty and Battlefield it's most welcome, and as for how Splatoon routinely puts you in one of two factions by asking a childish question like "Ketchup or mayo?" or "Jetpacks or hoverboards?", well, that's just brilliant.

It's mayo for the former, of course...

Maybe we need to hash this out online.
