10 Most Offensive Portrayals Of Women In Video Games This Decade (So Far)

Wrong on so many levels.

With not a week going by without some ancient totem of lad culture being consigned to the scrap heap, a surface-level inspection of the video game world would also suggest that, yes, some dark days are behind it. Long gone is the age of creepy Japanese molestation games and hacking consoles to see Lara Croft's pixelalted rump, while Princess Peach has even rescued Mario once or twice herself now. It's no coincidence either that numbers of female gamers are as high as they've ever been at a time when the gaming world finally appears to be treating its heroines with a degree of respect. But for every strong and empowering female lead in a game, there's still a number of lazy and two-dimensional portrayals of the fairer sex lurking around somewhere. Be they total fodder in the background, or a garish and offensive portrayal designed for little more than ogling and objectifying, some games have rekindled a worrying taste for violence against woman, sexualisation of vulnerable girls, and the notion that they're all either here to entertain or inconvenience the game's males. From bombs in vaginas, fetishisation of nuns, to some straight up needless voyeurism, things are better in 2015, but judging by these 10 there's still a really, really long way to go.
