The long-awaited puzzler from Jonathan Blow (Braid) racked up some of the year's best reviews (87 Metascore), but was it really that great?

Yes, the puzzles were exceedingly clever and it presented far better value-for-money than most likely expected, but there wasn't much more to it than its puzzles, with an obtuse narrative that ultimately didn't amount to much.

Should a game with so little of interest outside of its puzzles really have been in contention for Game of the Year awards? It was a compelling, often infuriating experience with some fantastic moments of realisation for the player, but didn't present nearly enough to earn so much praise from the gaming press in particular.
