10 Most Under-Appreciated Video Games Of 2018

So many essential games hardly anyone played.

Batman The Enemy Within

How awesome was God of War? And Red Dead Redemption II? Seriously, they are true masterpieces. Then there was Marvel's Spider-Man, Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Monster Hunter World, Celeste, Far Cry 5, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

No matter which way you slice it 2018 was a pretty amazing year for video games, and it's no wonder many consumers found it pretty hard keeping up with every "essential" title.

What about the rest, though? In between those mammoth releases, there were plenty of fantastic video games that flew right under the radar. From AAA experiences to even mobile offerings, 2018 was a banner year across the board.

While there are a plethora of end-of-year lists out there that will celebrate all the biggest releases, I want to take a minute to celebrate those less fortunate; those that came and went - those that deserved far more than they received.

10. GRIS

Batman The Enemy Within
Nomada Studio

GRIS came out right at the tail end of 2018, so it avoided all of the year-end awards and hullabaloo. However, that doesn't change the fact that it's a gorgeous 2D platformer that evokes Journey and The Unfinished Swan.

There have been many games that took Journey's formula and tried to recreate it, but this one actually succeeds where others fail. GRIS opts for a minimal turn at storytelling, allowing its jaw-dropping art style do all the talking. It straddles the line of being a MetroidVania but never quite commits, using brevity as a major positive.

By being overtly artsy and obtuse, GRIS is about the furthest thing one could get from Red Dead Redemption II, but sometimes a short trek through a mysterious world is all you really want - especially when its art direction is genuinely stunning in motion.
