10 Movies Based On Video Games That Misinterpreted Their Source

10. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnE64DbnUzY As I've said many a time, I'm a massive fan boy of Square Enix and will overlook most of their faults as long as they keep providing me with more games involving angsty teens and women who take the word "armour" as more of a fashion statement. That said, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is a film that had me wondering what on earth Square thought they were doing. I know that it's technically not based on the Final Fantasy series, but all the games tend to have a general premise they follow with certain re-occurring items, themes and monsters. When you add the Final Fantasy into the title of a film I expect to see Phoenix Down being used and Bahamut being summoned willy nilly. And yet I can fully understand why this film destroyed Square. Beyond passable CGI and some rather good voice acting, the story was forgettable and not enticing at all. When you look at Square's other film production, Final Flight of the Osiris, you become even more confused at why they thought Spirits Within would work. They worked on a short film based on The Matrix and what we got was a short film based on The Matrix. If the film got it wrong though, why have I ranked it so highly? Well truthfully, Square never said it was based on the Final Fantasy universe they merely included the title to possibly draw in more fans. This, however, proved to be their inevitable downfall.
