10 Movies Which Tried To Capture The Essence Of Gaming

Can gaming inspire great movies where games have failed? Yes and no.

Video games and movies have had an uneasy relationship, to say the least. Whether it was Sega's woeful attempt at merging movies with games in their Mega CD game Night Trap, or Hollywood having a stab at huge video game franchise adaptations like Street Fighter 2 and Super Mario Bros, the two medias seem to struggle to find the best way of being compatible. Gaming is an interactive pass time, and the passive experience of watching a film might be a permanent stumbling block to successfully merging the two. Where the games themselves might fail to bring about the greatest movies we've ever seen, perhaps gaming in its broader sense might offer a great theme for films to explore. Indeed, over the years a few filmmakers have had a go at making a film based around the concept of gaming, and the results, as we'll see, are quite frankly all over the place. Occasionally a director gets things just right, respecting the rules of the game - and the rules of gaming - with a degree of reverence. When they get it wrong, boy do they do it in spectacular style. From the laughably bad to the thoroughly entertaining, here are ten movies inspired by gaming.
