8. Earthbound - Pyjamas and Spanking

Although many of us in the UK didn't even know the young PSI master Ness existed until Super Smash Brothers came along, the North American version of Earthbound (AKA Mother 2) saw a few unusual things changed from its Japanese counterpart.

The vast majority of Earthbound's English localisation was carried out by then Nintendo of America employee Marcus Lindblom, who had a lot of creative freedom to change the game for American audiences as he saw fit.

As well as appropriating certain elements like changing alcohol to coffee and making in-game cult members look less like members of the Ku Klux Klan (who thought that was okay?), he added in a lot of private jokes and even named a random NPC after his daughter Nico.

At one point in the game, Ness is roaming around in a dream town called Magicant. In the Japanese version, he's naked (apart from his trademark baseball cap). This was changed in the American version to have our hero in his pyjamas (fashionable and modest).

The game also featured the line of "Die and go to Hell" changed to "I'll smash your guts out" and a punishment threat of spanking changed to getting no dessert. NO SOUP FOR YOU!
