I don't know about you, but there was a supreme lack of confidence displayed throughout GTA V, to the degree where it felt like a direct response to GTA IV.

Trevor, Michael and Franklin only barely contrasted each other when it came to gameplay and morality, their inclusions seemingly being intended to let you feel more 'comfortable' wreaking havoc, whereas Niko was forever talking about leaving his life of crime. It meant the entire game was stranded between having occasionally well-delivered and emotive cutscenes with memorable characters, yet they were squandered by not capitalising on any of their arcs.

Trevor and Michael's 'rebuilding friendship' idea fell apart when the former couldn't care less if his pal was mulched by the Triads, and Franklin was just a cipher for player intent, the decision to off his partners coming out of nowhere at the close of the story.

Such moral choices are indicative of what Rockstar started in GTA IV, but when you've got a game more preoccupied with unabashed escapism and chaos, there's not much room to build a meaningful narrative. Saints Row did soon this by doubling down on the anarchic elements of open-world crime games, whilst Mafia removed them and told a far more serious story.

You can't have both sides of this coin.GTA V played things way too safe, had too much money riding on it to take any real risks, and it shows.
