10 RPGs With Ridiculously Weird Stories

The most insane narrative-driven experiences in gaming!

Of all genres, arguably none has bested role-playing games when it comes to epic, immersive narratives. Over the decades, RPGs have seen gamers save the world hundreds of times over, defeating evil wizards or sending escaped demons back to where they came from. Traditionally, RPGs have taken place inside fantasy worlds, inspired heavily by the old tabletop games like Dungeons & Dragons, which in turn were influenced by the works of authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. Of course, unlike the novels created by these classic authors, RPG stories aren't always the masterful narrative experiences they aspire to be. While the narrative is often the main driving force of an RPG, above even gameplay, the genre can have a reputation for melodrama and formulaic characters. One of the most prominent casualties of this perception is Final Fantasy, with many fans arguing the series' stories had a drop in quality after IX. This list takes a look at ten of the weirdest stories ever told in an RPG. From hilariously obscure historical references, to bizarre stories of time travel and alternate dimensions, none of these games could be accused of sticking to a tried-and-tested formula.
