10 Surprisingly Great Multiplayer Modes In Single-Player Games

The Last of Us. Know for its... multiplayer?!

The Last Of Us
Naughty Dog

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's a bus flying through the sky, filled with Moisty Mermen and Bunny Brawlers.

No matter where you look these days, you're going to be aggressively bombarded with multiplayer games, most being rip-offs of something released a few months prior. It's an odd time, but one that is seemingly propelling gaming into the public eye like never before.

Yes, multiplayer is the talk of the town, whether it's Fortnite, PUBG, Destiny, Anthem, or Call of Duty. What those games all have in common though, is that they're all multiplayer games, first and foremost. Thankfully, the days of every single-player game being forced to necessitate a multiplayer suite is seemingly behind us.

That being said, it's not like there weren't some diamonds in the rough. For every Tomb Raider - which featured terrible multiplayer - there was a Uncharted 2 - which featured very good multiplayer. Today we want to celebrate those multiplayer modes that defied expectations and proved that, with enough love, even the most fervently single-player experience could facilitate a phenomenal multiplayer mode.

You'll find no flying buses or frying pans here, but you will find some grappling hooks, aliens, revolutionaries and even a pimp. Enjoy.

10. Saints Row

The Last Of Us
Deep Silver

Saints Row OG is something of an underrated game in-and-of itself; it was a more straight-laced GTA clone, but one with a distinct graphical style, interesting plot, and a fun open world. Of course, then the series devolved into pure insanity, but there's something quite attractive about that original title.

One reason was the games interesting multiplayer modes. Saints Row hopped on the multiplayer band-wagon a little earlier than most games of the era, and did so in its own unique way. It embraced traditional modes but leaned on a "gangster" theme; like kill confirmed but, rather than collecting dog tags, you collected gold chains instead.

Another such mode was called Protect The Pimp, in which one player attempted to escort a pimp from one location to another, while other players tried to stop them.

There were other modes as well, and a wealth of customisation options that didn't require an extra dime. It was zany and quite unique both at the time, and even now. Saints Row has always been something of an outlier, and the original games multiplayer was as well.
