Call of Duty has received plenty of flak over recent years for its focus on futuristic settings, but with a return to the WW2 era for the first time since World At War, there's certainly a feeling of homecoming for many longtime fans. To further add to that throwback feeling, players will be taking part in the Invasion of Normandy, and it should be glorious.

The concept of players being able to play through D-Day in COD isn't entirely new (Call of Duty II had a playable Normandy section), but with the heightened technology and increasingly brutal nature of this instalment, gamers will experience this situation like never before.

Developer Sledgehammer Games has a great opportunity to sell the game's legitimacy with this opening set piece. They must take cues from both the COD series' earlier work and classic war movies to make this definitive video game version of D-Day. If done right, Sledgehammer can raise their profile among gamers by bringing Call of Duty back to what made the series great in the first place.
