Competition has always been a fundamental part of why we game. From the oppositional style of Pong to the twin-control setup of many arcade cabinets, battling friends in local multiplayer or going online to see how you fare against the world, there's something about pushing your mental skills to the absolute limit that brings out a certain caliber of individual.

Indeed, like many other artforms and competitive sports, once you've practiced and refined your skills against the competition, it's time to make a mark on history itself. Gamers have been breaking records and challenging each other to do the same for decades, and with the Guinness World Records officially recognising many of these feats back in 2008, it helped raised the profile of speedrunners and other milestone-achievers for all those years before and after.

Let's just say, you may think you already clock a ton of hours on your favourite games or can nail a string of headshots better than the next guy, but you've got nothing on this lot...

10. Fastest Time Completing Final Fantasy VII Without Mods

Using a technique called 'step counting' - the actual science behind when various Final Fantasy games trigger their annoying random battles - the gamer known only as 'Kynos' managed to complete Final Fantasy VII in a mind-blowing six hours, 44 minutes and 49 seconds.

His approach boiled down to the science of knowing EXACTLY where to go at all times, manipulating the game's tracking of Cloud's footsteps to space out the various random battles - thereby freeing up some precious time - and ensuring the best attack combinations were being deployed in every single battle, every single time.

It took Kynos around 500 full playthroughs of Final Fantasy VII to nail down every last part of this method, but his reward is being officially recognised by Guinness as a bonafide World Record holder.
