9. Psychonauts 2
Indie studio Double Fine Productions delivered a platformer with a difference in 2005 when it released Psychonauts for PC. Instead of bouncing around mushroom kingdoms and green hills, players explored the psyches of in-game characters to wage war on their emotional baggage.
The game was criminally underappreciated upon release, but gained a cult following in later years, to the extent where Double Fine had the opportunity to reissue it and capitalise on its new-found popularity.
After reclaiming the publishing rights to Psychonauts in 2011, the studio has been working on a sequel, which is set to finally arrive in 2018.
Psychonauts 2 promises to delve deeper into Raz’s past and family history, and recapture the sense of oddball fun that made the original impossible to put down.
