10 Video Games Inspired By H.P. Lovecraft

8. Conarium

Amnesia The Dark Descent
Iceburg Interactive

Picking up directly after the events of Lovecraft’s famous At the Mountains of Madness short story, Conarium puts players in the shoes of a scientist based in Antarctica and tasks them with picking up the pieces of a failed expedition while uncovering some awful truths about the nature of reality. It wears its influences blatantly on its sleeve, and, in some ways, feels like a direct adaptation of the aforementioned fictional work.

Though similar to the previously-mentioned Call of Cthulhu game, Conarium places an even greater emphasis on atmosphere and exploration. While there are more than a few puzzles placed in the path of the player, the majority of the gameplay consists of finding and piecing together scraps of story and lore in order to discern a deeper narrative.

In that way, it may be more difficult for some players to enjoy. Like many of Lovecraft’s own stories, Conarium is short, sweet, and mystifying. A game which seeks to push the boundaries of what gaming can be in the first place, developers Zoetrope Interactive invite Lovecraft fans to become one of the protagonists in a story of universal insignificance.
