It's good fun to be the bad guy.

At the core of many of our favourite video games is a tale as old as time itself, of the struggle between Good and Evil. Whether those moral pillars take the form of human characters, aliens, shapes hell even conceptual expressions of colour and sound, the end result is the same. It's one opposing force against the other.

However as we've moved through the rapidly mutating video game industry, there has always been a desire to play as the Evil rather than the Good, and we've seen countless examples where you're given free reign to cause chaos and destruction. This can come about through player choice, by selecting the "Evil" campaign option, or even just because the developers never gave you any other course than to play as Santa's naughty list given corporeal form, but much rarer are the video games that let you play as the forces of Good and let you UNLOCK the ability to turn to the dark side.

So let's take a look as some titles that made you work hard, or open your wallets in order to dive into the devilsh world of playing as the main antagonist.

10. The Joker - Batman Arkham Asylum

When you think of Batman, what's the first thing that springs to mind?

No. Not this bat nipples. I'd just repressed that.

Weirdly enough the answer might not have anything to do with Juicy Bruce at all, but rather one of the most famous comic book villains ever, The Joker. Fans adore this character and have been pining out for years for a chance to play as the grease painted ne'er do well.

In two of the four Arkham games (Origins and Knight) you can even play as the smiling psychopath as part of the multiplayer and main narrative respectively, but the first time that you could "Unlock" the villain was in Arkham Asylum thanks to a free update called the "Play as The Joker Challenge Pack"

Here you got to don the gaudy purple suit and use special gadgets in order to eliminate all of the Arkham guards, and in doing so tell the story of how The Joker took over Arkham Asylum. It's brilliant fun, especially when using his comedy x-ray specs and his get out of jail free card that comes in the form of a gun with one bullet.

He's much weaker than bats, but it'll leave you smiling ear to ear by the time you're done.
