10 Ways To Make The Perfect Boss Battle

8. Size

shadow Now I'm not a huge believer in bigger is better (it's not about the size it's what you do with it) but in video games this sometimes becomes the exception. The giants in Shadow of the Colossus are much more ominous and impressive than if you entered the final arena to see Pikachu facing you. Bosses that physically overpower you are way more threatening and help develop the scale of the game.

7. Arena

bis Its not just about who you're facing but where you're facing them. It's all relative. A one-against-one psyche out with the psychopathic genius in a superhero game would be perfect in the enemy's lair whereas fighting a Mafia boss would be more suited to a shoot-out in an empty Brooklyn street. Scale also needs to be considered, as a first person shooter needs to be epic in its final moments and survival-horror works well in claustrophobic spaces. Making sure the environment is in keeping with the rest of the game is fundamental to an epic, final boss fight.
