10 Well-Known Gaming 'Facts' That Are Actually Bulls**t

8. Mario 64 Was The First 3D Platformer

In a bizarre twist on anything game-related you thought you could take for granted, Nintendo's legendary platformer, Mario 64, was actually a total rip-off of what ended up being Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. The story goes that Croc's creators, Argonaut Games, created a working 3D render of a character moving through their respective world (itself an amazing feat in the early 90s) and presented it to Nintendo, asking to have Yoshi front the adventure. Being very protective of their characters and franchises, Nintendo refused - but then went ahead and created the industry-defining Mario 64, stealing all the glory in the process. Argonaut were forced to recoup their losses, and so the visually-similar Croc appeared the following year, backed by Sony as an exclusive. Creative Director Jez San stated he later ran into Nintendo head-honcho Shigeru Miyamoto, who "thanked" him for giving them the idea, mentioning that Miyamoto's way of smoothing things over was to claim they'd get "enough in royalties to make up for it". How nice of him.
