11 Most Surprisingly Awesome Video Games Of 2017 (So Far)

10. Resident Evil 7

Capcom

Though Resident Evil 7's demo released long before the full game actually came out appeared to indicate a promising future for the franchise, there was still understandable skepticism from a lot of fans that Capcom, magnet for screw-ups that they are, could sustain that momentum throughout a complete game.

Long-time RE fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief, then, when it turned out that despite its noted flaws (namely an underwhelming finale), Resident Evil 7 was the franchise's best entry in years, a legitimately disturbing, visually stunning survival horror game that hewed closer to the roots of the earlier titles.

And Hell, if you were ballsy enough to play the game in VR, it convincingly staked its claim for being the scariest video game ever made, a nerve-shredding experience that's like nothing else in the series or, indeed, the genre.

Whether or not Capcom can sustain this brilliant reinvention for future titles remains to be seen, but at the very least they've delivered the series' first undeniable classic since Resident Evil 4.
