11. We Happy Few

Inspired by the likes of George Orwell's 1984 and Brave New World, the dystopian We Happy Few gained a huge amount of attention back in 2016 thanks to this amazing story-driven trailer.

Unfortunately, the initial early-access version of the title wasn't able to capitalise on the hype of that trailer. Featuring only the basic survival mode rather than any of the single-player story fans wanted, the quirky title was written off pretty quickly as a decent-but-underwhelming release.

That was before it was picked up by Gearbox, though. Thanks to their backing, the scope of the title has been expanded immeasurably, being transformed into a proper blockbuster rather than a limited indie release.

While that doesn't automatically mean it's going to be better, it should give the developers the resources they need to properly bring this unique world to life, and hopefully result in one of the best new games of next year.
