12 Insane Links Between Popular Video Games You Totally Missed

Turns out CJ was in GTA IV all along.

Easter eggs in games that reference film and TV aren't anything new, as with increasingly large teams of people working on any number of titles, there's always going to be a litany of outside influences they want to pay homage to. Occasionally though, rather than just these two mediums there's a great many studios that tip their cap towards the legends of game design too - a franchise from a similar genre, or just a hugely influential favourite that inspired and paved the way for their game in the first place. In addition, meme-based humour is something that's been done to varying degrees of success depending on your point of view, and how many "See what we did there!"-style references you can tolerate. Saints Row for example now thrives on being as ridiculous as possible, whilst randomly at the end of part four's opening sequence you'll find yourself delivering a Stone Cold Stunner to an alien soldier, before Haddaway's "What Is Love?" comes blaring through the escape craft's speakers. On the other hand Borderlands and Watch Dogs went overboard in the other direction, and like someone who's trying too hard with the never-ending series of nods and winks in all directions, it started to look a bit silly. For those games that tuck away the shiniest hidden gems in the most rewarding places though, all it takes is a Sherlockian team of eagle-eyed fans to seek them out.
