12 Reasons You Were Wrong About Batman: Arkham Origins

9. Innovative Detective Mode

Even though Rocksteady had essentially nailed most aspects of Batman's persona, the detective aspects of both Asylum and City were sorely lacking.

WB Montreal remedied this problem by providing not just a new element to Detective Mode itself, but also by introducing crime-scene side missions which while short, provided an effective distraction from the game's main story mode.

Both the main narrative and the numerous side missions found with Origins made effective use of the CSI style function introduced by the new studio. Despite not fully offering the player a complete detective experience, piecing together evidence and reconstructing a crime helped bring immersion to a new level, as people were finally able to see the World's Greatest Detective doing what he does best.

Perhaps the most widespread and resounding critique levelled at Origins upon its release was that it offered 'too much of the same', and nothing new to the franchise. Not only is this criticism unfair, but it also completely dismisses many of the new features introduced by the developers.

Why is it that franchises like Call of Duty and Battlefield are able to escape these comments despite minimalist innovation in their successors? Origins wasn't able to deviate from its core gameplay mechanics pioneered by Rocksteady (and rightly so) because said mechanics were already close to perfection - what it did do was offer new additions that further helped realise Rocksteady's goal of making players feel like they were donning the Bat-Suit themselves.
