There's a retro throwback and then there's Double Dragon IV. Developed by Arc System Works under the guise of making a sequel that would be "Just like you remember", it's important to remember that said time was literally 27 years ago.

I guarantee many of you reading are younger than the time between instalments (I myself am only 28), and in that time, the side-scrolling beat 'em up has all but died. For good reason.

Returning to DD IV was an exercise in remembering precisely why we all got sick of the genre in the first place: Overly repetitive combos, awkward 'lane' placement that means you can never reliably grapple anybody and - in this case - throwback graphics that land on the wrong side of charming.

Double Dragon might twix your nostalgic nethers, but for me, it was nothing more than an era of gaming best left to age with grace.
