14. DmC: Devil May Cry

DMC devil may cry
Capcom

What Works?

The combat. Being developed by Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West devs, Ninja Theory, we knew all the action backing Dante's reboot would be spot-on, and thankfully, the team didn't stop after recreating the flair of Capcom's base feel. Instead, Dante now has a more 'hot-swapping' style, letting him switch between multiple weapons and items, juggling foes with everything from gauntlets to shurikens.

Aesthetically this had some of the most inventive action set-pieces this side of Platinum Games, with a particular level set 'inside' what was meant to be a set of Fox News credits, seeing you take down a faux-Bill O'Reilly in the process. Pure genius.

What Doesn't?

Dante. And when your main character doesn't hold up, it's only downhill from there.

All the solid combat and incredible environmental design in the world can't save a character we don't want to play as, and from the moment this pugnacious, overly-self confident Son of Sparda said "Never in a million years" in response to wearing a white wig (i.e. the original design of the character), the fans would never forgive him.

This is all outside the fact that nobody wanted a non-Capcom developed DMC in the first place, with all the trailers, pre-release interviews and general footage of DmC: Devil May Cry only being met with hatred. A game out of time that didn't serve the fans or the wider populace, it's no surprise a sequel was swiftly swept under the rug.
