One of the biggest talking points coming away from E3 was Sony's refusal to join the cross-play initiative of Microsoft and Nintendo, which would allow all major platforms to play multiplayer games together.

Sony's rather flimsy "Won't someone think of the children!?" excuse was widely lambasted by players and press, but Microsoft offered gamers a little hope by confirming at Gamescom that they are in talks with Sony to make it work.

Xbox Head of Marketing Aaron Greenberg stated, "We're talking to them and we're hopeful that they'll be supportive of it." There was nothing approaching a confirmation that it will definitely happen, of course, but it's encouraging all the same.
